Designing a new building next to a work masterly, known worldwide as the MACBA by Richard Meier, is a need to make some reflections, to avoid the urge to get presumptuously in competition, stimulated by volume and pure white and try to design a building in harmony and almost "son" of the master.

My choice then was to put, almost like a cultural mediation,  a building which seeks to bring back in the square of the elements  that belong to the history of Barcelona with the aim of creating a sort of link between the past and the modern :  severity and creativity, which in my opinion  are the two distinctive features of Catalonia.

Given the use of the building,on entering, I wish the young visitor had the impression of great inner peace and serenity typical Catalan Gothic architecture. I thought of an entrance hall with a bare and austere interior, with columns soaring upwards and the light filtering through stained glass windows and high pointed arch, with minimalist interpretation.

I would like to make revive a small part of the excitement that must have had Anton Gaudi at the time   entering the church Santa Maria de Mar of the fourteenth century or in the cathedral, to be able of imagine his most famous work "La Sagrada Familia", still unfinished, but a point of the city which no traveler to Barcelona was able to give up.

The spirit of Gaudi still pervades the architectural scene of Bracellona and the so-called "Catalan modernism" is well represented with many buildings, in the image of the town. But Barcelona is a city of art and many artists. Not the least Joan Miro to the which,  through his works made of  joyful and almost childlike signs, I would like to be able to inspire me to represent the sunny side of Catalonia.

The location of the building deserves the utmost transparency and solutions for making the vision of the city from any plan: I designed the structure as if resting on a plinth clad in stone of Catalonia and glass exterior , protected by aluminum sunscreens leaving large surfaces dedicated to photovoltaic panels and an interior architecture extremely airy,  thanks to extensive use of large open spaces and large windows. On every floor going from one area to another you can look on the floor below and you can catch glimpses large views of surrounding landscape.
